Stockholm through our eyes: Gamla stan

Join us to Gamla Stan's hidden gems! We guide you away from the tourist routes and show Stockholm's oldest district through our eyes.

1. Storkyrkan in the morning light

Storkyrkan
Before the alleys fill with people, the area around Storkyrkan is almost still. Here, the Middle Ages, royal history and several hundred years of Stockholmers' everyday life meet. Feel free to look up at the vaults and the narrow alleys around — much of Gamla Stan's soul remains here.

2. The quiet alleys around Prästgatan

Prästgatan
Just a few minutes from the major tourist routes, the atmosphere changes. Prästgatan and the surrounding quarters offer cobblestones, crooked facades and small details that tell of the city's medieval history.

3. Järnpojken – the little statue in the alley

Järnpojken
One of Gamla Stan's smallest sights is also one of the most popular. The little iron boy sits still all year round and often receives small coins, scarves and greetings from passers-by.

4. Skeppsbron early mornings or late evenings

Skeppsbron
Along Skeppsbron, Stockholm still feels like an old port city. From here, iron, tar and wood were shipped out to Europe during the Swedish Empire. Today, the quay is one of our favorite places for evening light and views over Saltsjön.

5. Mårten Trotzigs alley

Mårten Trotzigs alley
Gamla Stan's narrowest alley is only just over 90 centimeters wide at its narrowest point. But it is not only the width that fascinates — here the medieval city still feels almost present.

6. The German Church and the surrounding quarters

Tyska kyrkan
The German commercial presence strongly influenced Gamla Stan for several hundred years. Around the church you will find some of the city's most atmospheric quarters with high gables, courtyards and traces of the Hanseatic League's Stockholm.

7. Slottsbacken and the meeting between old and new

Slottsbacken
Here, several eras meet at the same time — medieval city, the Swedish Empire's ambitions and today's Stockholm. Feel free to take a few minutes and study facades, portals and level differences. Gamla Stan was not built in one era, but rebuilt for almost 800 years.
