Stockholm Through Our Eyes: Riddarholmen

Join us to Riddarholmen! Discover royal history, beautiful views and tranquility in the middle of Stockholm.

1. Riddarholmen Church and the city's silhouette

Riddarholmen Church
The tall spire over Riddarholmen is one of Stockholm's most well-known silhouettes. Here, royal history, the Middle Ages and tranquility meet just a few minutes from Gamla Stan's livelier quarters.

2. Birger Jarl's Square in the morning light

Birger Jarl's Square
Early mornings, the square is almost unexpectedly calm. Between palace facades and older buildings, it feels like the city has not quite woken up yet.

3. The view over Riddarfjärden

Riddarfjärden
The promenade along the water on the western side of Riddarholmen offers some of the city's most open views. Here you can see Kungsholmen, City Hall and the evening sun reflecting over Lake Mälaren.

4. The palaces of the Swedish Empire

Wrangelska Palace
Riddarholmen was long a place for nobility and power. Several of the palaces around the island tell of the Swedish Empire's ambitions and of Stockholm as a growing capital.

5. The small alleys and level differences

Riddarholmen
Riddarholmen feels different from the rest of the inner city. Narrow passages, cobblestones and level differences mean that the area still bears traces of older Stockholm.

6. Evert Taube's terrace

Evert Taube's terrace
One of our favorite places to stop for a while. From here, the view opens up over Lake Mälaren, and the evening light over the water is among the most beautiful Stockholm has to offer.

7. The evening calm after Gamla Stan has emptied

Gamla stan
When the alleys in Gamla Stan begin to empty of people, Riddarholmen becomes almost still. It is then that the place shows its most atmospheric side — with water, church bells and the city's lights around it.
